Canine Bloat
Bloat, stomach torsion or twisted stomach
Some medical emergencies in pets are truly frightening—but none compares to the speed and seriousness of bloat (gastric dilatation and volvulus). It can escalate in minutes, making quick veterinary care essential to save lives.
GDV, Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus, is commonly referred to as BLOAT. This is a serious condition in dogs where the stomach becomes distended with gas, food, or fluid and then twists on itself. This twisting blocks blood flow to vital organs and is a life-threatening emergency.
Pets with BLOAT will undergo emergency surgery for a gastropexy, which is where a veterinarian will de-rotate the stomach and then suture it to the abdominal muscles, which will prevent GDV from occurring again, restoring oxygen and blood flow to vital organs.
While GDV / BLOAT is most commonly seen in large breed dogs, this can also be found in any patient with a broad and or deep chest cavity. Here is an informational link about BLOAT >
